Tools for Enhancing Assessment Literacy for Teachers of English as an Additional Language (TEAL)

TEAL provides teachers with resources to support EAL learners in Victorian schools, including those from a refugee background, students born in Australia and overseas and fee-paying international students.

The TEAL assessment resource centre provides within an 'assessment for learning' framework:

  • practitioner professional learning
  • a bank of online resources designed to support the assessment and reporting of students' English language proficiency and progress
  • annotated units of work
  • an online practitioner discussion forum.

The assessment of students' English language proficiency is supported by the online Reading and Vocabulary assessment for EAL students (RVEAL), available to schools for use as an assessment instrument from Term 2 2017. RVEAL provides teachers with diagnostic information about learners' reading and vocabulary skills and knowledge and an indicative placement of students against the EAL Developmental Continuum P – 10 in the Reading and Viewing mode.

The 3-day professional learning program, Putting TEAL into Practice: A whole school approach to improving the assessment of EAL students is designed to familiarise teachers with the EAL assessment resource centre and provide practitioners with the tools to drive continual improvement in their students' language proficiency. Applications for places in the Semester 1 program will open in Term 1, 2018. For more information, visit the What's New bulletin board of the EAL assessment resource centre or email eal@edumail.vic.gov.au if you would like to be added to the Putting TEAL into Practice mailing list.

Further information about the development of RVEAL and the reports available to teachers is available on the Insight Assessment Platform and the EAL assessment resource centre.
